#9 Transportation Modes - Lack of access to different modes of transportation
Baltimore is a car-centric city that lacks diverse, safe, and accessible alternative modes of transportation. This makes it difficult for non-drivers and those who cannot afford to drive to easily get to different parts of the city and surrounding areas.
Why it matters
There are multiple factors that have led to a car-first mindset in Baltimore: the city’s public transit system is unreliable and underfunded, bicycle safety has failed to be prioritized, and in food deserts and largely vacant areas, walking simply will not get our community members where they need to go. Because of these problems, driving is often residents’ only option for making it from Point A to Point B, These factors have also led our city to continue to invest in car-centric infrastructure over multimodal infrastructure.
What does "good" look like?
Baltimoreans have multiple transit options to get where they need to go, and the use of alternative means of transportation (such as bikes, trains, walking, etc.) is increased.
How could technology solve this?
